Living To Music Update – Sept 2010

Having enjoyed such an auspicious start, Living To Music is catching the imagination of an ever increasing amount of music lovers. Next up, on Sunday October 3rd at 9.00pm, it’s ‘Abbey Road’. I’d always had The Beatles in mind for the third session, it was just a matter of which LP. ‘Abbey Road’ (the final one they recorded, but the penultimate one released) is a great introduction for those who aren’t familiar with their albums, whilst it’s a selection I’m sure will meet the approval of those who are.

Bestival Betrothal

I received an unusual request from Matt Lund via my SoundCloud page a few weeks – he told me that he’d got together with his girlfriend whilst I was playing at Bestival last year, in the Rizla Arena, and had decided it would be the perfect time to propose to her during my spot twelve months on, this time in the Bollywood Tent. He asked if I could play the edit of Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell’s ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ (aka BT Edits ‘Mr Marvin & Ms Tammi’), which he’d heard me play in 2009 and has been such a showstopper for me during recent years (thanks to Michael Cook for putting me on to it). That would be his cue to get down on one knee and pop the question.

When Dorothy Met Floyd

Better known in the States (where the idea originated in the mid-90’s) than in the UK, a quirky aspect of ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’s’ legacy is the supposed synchronization if you play they album at the same time as you watch ‘The Wizard Of Oz’ (1939). This is referred to as ‘Dark Side Of The Rainbow’, ‘The Wizard Of Floyd’ and ‘Dark Side Of Oz’.

I’m a DJ from Merseyside. I started out in 1975, but stopped for almost 20 years, between 1984 and the end of 2003, at which point I started again.

One night during the period I wasn’t deejaying, turning off my mind, relaxing, and floating downstream I had what might be termed a moment of clarity. Paradoxically, although I was no longer a DJ in the literal sense I suddenly became aware that I’d never actually stopped being a DJ, for even if I was in a room with just one person I couldn’t help but ask them ‘have you heard this?’, and not only ‘heard’, but ‘have you seen this / read this?’, for it goes beyond music. Already taken somewhat aback by this nugget of self-discovery, I realised, in true eureka style, that this all pre-dates my being a DJ and goes back as far as I can remember – I’ve always had an inherent need to share, it’s absolutely central to my nature. This was quite a revelation.

So it’s no wonder that I became a Disc Jockey, for once I fell in love with those circular pieces of magical plastic during my formative years, it wasn’t a matter of choosing this as a path, the path pretty much chose me.

I don’t intend this to be a DJ blog as such, but more a blog by someone who happens to be a DJ – a place where personal emphasis takes precedence over professional, although, as I’ve already explained, the two aspects are, of course, inescapably entwined.
