Following the re-boot of the A&R Edits imprint last year, the latest 12”, #11 in the series, is now available, coupling Italian DJ Moplen’s edit of mid-‘70s Disco favourite, ‘It Only Takes A Minute’ by Tavares, with a collaboratory take on David Joseph’s ‘You Can’t Hide (Your Love From Me)’, the result of my 2011 edit of Moplen’s edit of Larry Levan’s 1983 remix of the track, which now finally finds its way onto vinyl.

The limited-edition A&R Edits label returns to vinyl after a 4 year gap, the last and 9th release in the series appearing back in 2015 – previous edits courtesy of Henry Greenwood, Derek Kaye, Sophie Lloyd, F.A.M.E, Fingerman, Peza and Twisted Soul Collective. The new release, a collaboration between Henry and myself, couples ‘Disco Mondo’ with ‘In The City’, and is available to purchase here via Juno:
In January 2012 I received an email from Lee Perry. My first thought was ‘surely not’, but it wasn’t – this was the other Lee Perry, not Scratch but Wolverhampton’s very own Peza.
‘Don’t You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come’ is a track that was first played at Blackpool Mecca in 1976 following the acquisition of a US promo from fabled Norfolk based Glaswegian record dealer John Anderson (Soul Bowl) by DJ Colin Curtis, and then a release copy via a London based supplier who specialized in importing new American releases to distribute to US Troops in Germany & Europe, specifically black GI’s with a love of Soul and Funk. The Northern Soul sessions at the Mecca were hugely influential, the club revered, along with Manchester’s Twisted Wheel, The Catacombs in Wolverhampton, The Golden Torch in Stoke-On-Trent, and the scene’s most famous venue, Wigan Casino, at the vanguard of the movement.
With all the things I want to do, something always has to give, it’s an ongoing juggling act. By 2012 I was flat out, not only with the DJ side of things, but the blog had really taken off and had begun to take up a lot more time than I’d initially envisaged. On top of this I was still no closer to my aim of moving back into production and developing my own recording projects – a long process which is finally coming to fruition this year, with the first releases on my label, Super Weird Substance, due ahead of the summer months (the blog itself having had to take more of a back seat whilst we pushed this through). So back there in 2012 the only thing to do was stop taking on remixes for a while, just to help clear a bit of space in my world and work out where my priorities lay moving forward. It’s 10 months since I blogged about the first 2 A&R Edits releases, issued simultaneously on DJ only limited 12” vinyl. Since then there have been 3 further additions, with another to follow next month, making 6 releases in all, each containing 2 tracks.
The first 2 releases on the new A&R Edits label are simultaneously issued this week on limited DJ only vinyl – ‘Buffalo Dance’ / ‘Voice of Nature’, Henry Greenwood’s reworks of Neneh Cherry’s ‘Buffalo Stance’ and George Benson’s version of ‘Nature Boy’, and ‘Nobody’ / ‘Music Up’, Derek Kaye’s takes on ‘Ain’t Nobody’ by Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan (which fuses the Frankie Knuckles ‘Hallucinogenic Mix’ and the ‘Bassapella’ with the original) and ‘Turn The Music Up’ by Players Association.
